How to play Reversi

Reversi (also known as Othello) is played on an 8 by 8 board by two players, black and white. Each start out with two discs (always placed on the same spot in the center). Black begins the game.

In turn each places a disc, provided that this move satisfies the following:

  • The square is empty.

  • The new disc must be directly next to one or more of the opponent's discs.

  • This new disc encloses one or more of the opponent's discs (using the new disc and one or more of the player's already placed discs).

You can enclose the enemy's discs horizontally, vertically and diagonally. All discs enclosed by the newly placed disc are captured; this means that they take on the player's colour.

When a player cannot move, he has to pass. However, when a player can move, he is not allowed to pass.

The game is finished when no one has a valid move left (f.e. when the board is full). The player who then has the most discs wins.

  • Use "Settings" to change the settings. You can change your colour and you can change the computer level.

  • When you cannot move, the "I Pass" button will be enabled, so you can pass.

  • Your valid moves are shown by the little blue discs.

  • The last move is indicated by a little gray disc.
